Definitions

 

Recreational (Rec.)

Recreational classes are fun classes where dancers will learn and work on a choreographed dance for the dance season. At the end of the dance season, they will perform their dance in Capella Dance Academy’s Year End Show. Depending on the commitment of the dancers, a group may attend 0-1 competitions.

Regular Competition (Comp.)

Competition classes are where dancers will learn and work on a choreographed dance for the dance season. Dancers will be placed in classes based on their dance experience. All dancers taking Regular Competition classes must also take either Ballet or a Tech class. Regular attendance is required. They will also be taking their dance to 1 or 2 dance competitions. The average cost for each dancer to enter competition is $35-$45 per dancer, per dance, in each competition. Dancers may have to miss school if their competition falls on a school day. At the end of the dance season, they will perform their dance in Capella Dance Academy’s Year End Show.

High Competition (Company)

Dancers will be invited into this company level and given the option to either accept or move back to regular competition level. It’s for Junior to Advanced ages 8 and up, with 6 years minimum of dance training. Dancers must meet all of the prerequisites placed by the instructor for this group.

High Comp. will attend 3 or 4 competitions in a dance season. This is for our highly committed dancers. Regular attendance is required. All High Competition dancers must also take Ballet and Tech, as well as 1 Regular Competition class. Dancers may have to miss school if their competition falls on a school day. The average cost for each dancer to enter competition is $35-$45 per dancer, per dance for each competition. At the end of the dance season, they will perform their dance in Capella Dance Academy’s Year End Show.

 

Dance Styles

Acro (Acrobatic Dance)

An exciting and dynamic form of dance combining gymnastics and various dance techniques into one highly energetic routine.

Acro Competitive Prerequisites: Cartwheel on both sides, back bridges, handstands held for 3 seconds and full splits in at least one direction. All Acro Competition dancers Jr-Sr. will be placed in classes by teacher discretion, not by age. All dancers in Acro Competition must take one Acro Tech class per week, with exception of Beginner Acro and Recreational Acro. It is highly recommended that all Acro dancers take other dance styles as well, during the dance year. There is an Acro Recreational class for those not able to meet the requirements for a competition group.

Open Ballet

Ballet is the basis of all dance. It teaches discipline, coordination, proper posture, grace and fluidity of movement. (We offer Open Ballet only.)

Musical Theatre & Production

This is a theatrical theme based class teaching students stage presence and acting. Musical Theatre classes will perform one song. Production classes will perform multiple songs for an approximate 20 minute performance.

Tap

A highly energetic stylized dance form communicating through rhythm, sound and movement. The dancers wear shoes with heel and toe taps.

 

Kinder Dance

A fun filled program teaching the basics of Ballet, Jazz and creative movement. Dancers will be exposed to a wide variety of dance styles.

Hip Hop

A fast paced, funky dance which takes its influence from modern street dance. It’s a vibrant and energetic style filled with the latest dance steps.

Jazz

Jazz is a fast paced and energetic dance style that exposes students to a wide variety of different music. Individuality and creativity are an integral part of this class.

Lyrical & Contemporary

Jazz and modern ballet combined into graceful and expressive dance forms. They use movement to tell a story through dance.


Solos, Duos & Trios

Dancers that are interested in performing a solo, duo or trio must read and fill out the Solo/Duo/Trio Cost & Guidelines form to apply. Once applications are received owner/director will make the decision of who is ready for a solo/duo/trio and will contact you.

Solo/duo/trios are for highly committed dancers only. Dancers 11 and under must have 2-3 years competitive training. Dancers 12+ must have 4 years competitive experience. All dancers wanting to participate in a solo, duo or trio must have at least 3 years of consecutive competition dance training in the style they wish to perform their solo, duo or trio in.

Solos, duos and trios can attend up to 3 or more competitions. Solos, duos and trios will not be placed in our Year End Show line-ups due to limited space. This could change, due to show scheduling.

Age Groups & Levels

  • Kinder Dance Ages 3-4

  • Pre-Beginner Age 5

  • Beginners Ages 6-7

  • Pre-Junior Ages 7-8

  • Juniors Ages 9-10

  • Pre-Intermediates Ages 11-12

  • Intermediates Ages 12-14

  • Seniors Ages 15+

  • High Competition Ages 9+ (By Placement)

All age groups and levels are approximate. Must meet all prerequisites to be placed in High Competition.

All dancers will be placed in classes that the instructors see fit. Age is a guideline for class placement and is then based on experience. If a dancer is brand new to dance and over the age of 8, it will be recommended that they take at least one year of a Recreational class or ballet to get their basis before entering a competition class.
